How Feeling Your Emotions Can Improve Your Well-Being

Written by Tammy Machmali

Have you ever wondered why some people seem so disconnected from their emotions? It might surprise you, but many of us are taught from a young age to avoid our feelings. We’re conditioned to push them aside, treating them as something to be feared or suppressed. Over time, this leads us to build walls around our emotions, which can result in emotional numbness and affect our physical and mental well-being.

Dr. Brené Brown, a leading researcher on vulnerability and shame, discusses this in her book The Gifts of Imperfection. She explains how our culture often teaches us to avoid uncomfortable emotions, which can lead to emotional numbness and even physical symptoms like chronic pain or fatigue. This avoidance can block our energy flow and impact our overall well-being.

In my practice, I frequently see people who are scared to face their emotions. They often describe how they’ve closed off their hearts after disappointments, breakups, or childhood bullying. They fear that truly feeling their emotions will overwhelm them or keep them stuck forever. But here’s the truth: facing your emotions can bring relief and clarity. Dr. John K. Pollard, in his book Emotional Intelligence, notes that acknowledging and processing emotions can lead to better emotional resilience and mental clarity. It can also boost your self-confidence. Embracing all your emotions allows you to feel everything and fear nothing.

Feeling All Our Emotions: A Path to Freedom

Embracing every emotion can be incredibly freeing and fulfilling. Here’s how:

  • Living Life Freely: Allowing yourself to feel all emotions helps you break free from feeling stuck. It’s like removing invisible barriers, letting you live more openly and authentically. Imagine what it would be like to shed those internal walls and truly be yourself.

  • Expressing Yourself Authentically: When you embrace your emotions, you understand yourself on a deeper level. This deeper connection allows you to express yourself more genuinely and build stronger connections with others. It’s like discovering a truer version of yourself and sharing it with the world.

  • Following Your Intuition: Being in touch with your emotions helps you tune into your intuition. When you understand how you’re feeling, you can make choices that truly align with who you are. It’s like having a personal compass guiding you toward decisions that feel right.

  • Being Creative: Strong emotions can spark creativity. By fully experiencing and expressing your feelings, you unlock a wellspring of inspiration. It’s like using your emotions as fuel for artistic and innovative pursuits, leading to new and exciting creations.

Try This Simple Exercise to Feel Your Emotions

  1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a comfortable, quiet place where you won’t be interrupted. This could be a cozy corner of your home or a peaceful spot in a park.

  2. Take Deep Breaths: Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Inhale slowly through your nose, letting your belly expand, and then exhale gently through your mouth. This helps calm your mind and body.

  3. Check-In with Yourself: Ask yourself what you’re feeling right now. Are you experiencing joy, sadness, anger, or something else? Notice the emotion without judgment.

  4. Name the Emotion: Identify the emotion you’re feeling and give it a name, such as “frustration” or “happiness.” Naming it helps you understand it better.

  5. Allow the Feeling: Permit yourself to fully experience the emotion. Imagine it as a wave you’re riding. Let it come and go naturally, without trying to control or suppress it.

  6. Reflect on the Emotion: Once the intensity has passed, reflect on it. What triggered this feeling? How did it affect you? What can you learn from this experience?

  7. Express the Emotion: Find a healthy way to express the emotion, such as through writing, talking to a friend, or engaging in a creative activity. I used to paint my feelings, and it was both healing and eye-opening for me.

By following these steps, you can learn to welcome your emotions and prevent them from becoming overwhelming. Remember, feelings are like waves—they come and go. Accepting them helps maintain emotional balance and enrich your life. It’s not just about healing; it’s about living more fully and authentically.

To wrap up, embracing and processing your emotions—whether they’re joyful, sad, angry, or anything in between—allows you to experience life more fully. Just like the weather, our feelings are ever-changing. Understanding this helps you manage them better. By letting yourself feel and express your emotions, you pave the way for greater emotional balance and personal growth.
