Why boundaries are statements, not questions

Written by Tammy Machmali

When establishing boundaries, it's important to recognize that they are not set with question marks but rather communicated assertively and clearly. Here's an exploration of why boundaries are statements, not questions:

  1. Clarity and Assertiveness:

Boundaries serve as guidelines that define what is acceptable and unacceptable in various aspects of our lives. By expressing them as statements, you communicate with clarity and assertiveness, leaving little room for ambiguity.

  2. Ownership of Personal Space:

Phrasing boundaries as statements reinforces your ownership of your personal space, needs, and limits. It conveys a sense of self-assurance and responsibility for your well-being.

  3. Avoiding Ambiguity:

Questions can create uncertainty and may be interpreted as negotiable. When setting boundaries, it's crucial to avoid ambiguity to ensure that others understand the non-negotiable nature of certain limits.

  4. Empowering Communication:

Statements empower you to assert your needs without seeking validation or approval from others. This form of communication promotes self-confidence and reinforces your autonomy in decision-making.

  5. Setting Expectations:

Clearly stated boundaries set expectations for how you want to be treated and what you consider acceptable behavior. This proactive approach helps prevent misunderstandings and conflicts.

  6. Establishing Consistency:

Boundaries are most effective when consistently enforced. By stating them as declarations, you emphasize the consistent nature of your limits, contributing to the establishment of trust and respect in relationships.

  7. Encouraging Respectful Interaction:

When boundaries are presented as firm statements, they signal a need for respect. This type of communication encourages others to understand and honor your limits without the need for negotiation.

Examples of Boundaries as Statements:

  • "I need some alone time to recharge, so I won't be available for calls or visits during these hours."

  • "I am not comfortable discussing certain topics, and I would appreciate it if we could focus on more neutral subjects."

  • "I have a policy of not lending money to friends, and I hope you understand that it's nothing personal."

It took me years to make a change and learn how to communicate with my daughters and others. By expressing boundaries as statements, you convey a sense of self-assuredness and promote open communication. Remember that setting boundaries is a skill that evolves with practice, and the more confidently you assert your needs, the more effectively you can nurture healthy and respectful relationships.
